ORNAP-Davao held its 10th Convention

Mar Franco G. Amigo, RN

“Perioperative Nurses: Influencing the Future of Safe Patient Care”, is the theme for The Operating Room Nurses Association of the Philippines – Davao Chapter’s 10th Annual Regional Convention and Scientific Meeting held last November 28, 2009 at the Waterfront Insular Hotel, Lanang, Davao City. The theme focuses on patient’s safety especially on perioperative nursing care. Promoting harmony among surgeons, anesthesiologist and perioperative nurses to create an environment of safety for patients and rendering the best achievable perioperative nursing care.

An overwhelming number (492) of participants on both academe and health institutions who came from Davao City, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley making the event possible. There were also participants from as far as CARAGA Region, Maguindanao, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat who traveled hours just for the gathering. The Northern Mindanao Chapter headed by their President, together with the other officers and members were also present. Completing the assemblage were guests from ORNAP National leaded by the National President, Cathline D. Avellano, RN accompanied by Flor Burgos, RN and Redenta Mamaclay, RN.

The morning was commenced with a Eucharistic Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Ritchie Gamaya with the chapter’s officers and the participants. Rochelle Jane F. Sumampong, ORNAP-Davao Chapter President formally opened the Convention proper. The participants were informed and updated with regard to the ORNAP national activities and funding through the National President’s report given by the president herself. The Keynote Speaker, a nurse by profession, Nida M. Penar, RN, MAN, MAHA, shares her personal experiences in the operating room which motivates and inspires everyone on how important perioperative nursing is to the safety of each patient. She was given warmth applause after her talk.

“TIME OUT: Safety Surgical Checklist”, started the scientific sessions with Rodel Migue Flores, MD, DPBS, as the lecturer. He emphasized on the importance of the WHO Safety Surgical Checklist and detailed the different process measures that comprise the checklist.

A lavish banquet was taken pleasure in by the guests and participants in the scenic beachfront tent of the Waterfront Insular Hotel at the same time as listening to the jazz music played on. As the others are still enjoying the feast, a number of participants had the opportunity to visit and roam around the scientific exhibits of the participating exhibitors. This was definitely an out of the ordinary bliss to get ready for another stirring afternoon activity.

The afternoon meeting was initiated by a plastic surgeon, Arnulfo Mapayo, MD, with the topic on “Reconstructive Surgery: New Trends in Care of Surgical Wounds”. Queries were raised and were entertained subsequently. Annabelle R. Borromeo, RN, PhD, CNS, was the next presenter with a rousing lecture on “Wanted: A few Good Perioperative Nurses”. She accentuated on the makings of a nurse who is successful and lives a life of meaning and influence by means of real life experiences of her own. Last of all, a Past Board of Nursing, Eufemia S. Faciolan-Octaviano, RN, EdD, had an exciting talk on “Communication: A Vital Competence in Patient Care”. She discussed the subject very well. The significance of communication to the nursing care is the focal point of the talk.

In about to end and to bring forth the success of the convention, special gifts and tokens were given to some of the fortunate participants whose names were luckily drawn.

Certainly, without a doubt, the convention was an outstanding achievement through the passion and solidarity of each of the officers and their advisers.

Congratulation and Mabuhay ORNAP-Davao Chapter!
