The Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) organized the 1st Philippine Summit on Patient Safety in Surgery last March 08, 2008 at the Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza. ORNAP was among the various health care organizations who were invited to this historic event in Perioperative Environment. ORNAP officers who attended the event were Mr. Rony M. Fajilagutan, Ms. Marilyn A. Aro, Ms. Cecilia L. Amontos, Ms. Analyn Salivio and Ms. Kaye Avellano.
A lecturette on The ABCs of Patient Safety in Surgery by Dr. Alejandro C. Dizon made us understand the new interest in safe surgery and he presented strategies for reduction or elimination of errors in the perioperative setting. Dr. Dizon is involved in quality assurance in health care and patient safety and is currently the Chief Quality Officer of the St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Another patient safety advocate, Dr. Teodoro Herbosa, presented the World Health Organization (WHO) Initiative on World Alliance on Patient Safety. He discussed on the Surgical Errors, Global Patient Safety Challenge/s, Surgical Vital Statistics and Local lessons learned from these baseline data. Dr. Herbosa is considered as one of the leaders in trauma surgery and is currently an Associate Professor of the Division of Trauma, Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine of the University of the Philippines.
PCS President, Dr. Armando Crisostomo, tackled on adopting a Shared Vision/Mission on patient Safety Surgery. Their group deserves more than an ovation for initiating this activity.
The common goal of all participating organizations towards an improved culture of safety for surgical patients has proven to be the best drive in conducting this activity. Our continuous commitment unveiled in the Focus Group Discussion done on the latter part of the activity wherein ideas of various representatives were shared, collated and reported.
ORNAP has shared its commitment in supporting PCS in this endeavour towards Patient Safety so much so that we have partnered with them in revisiting the manual for Recommended Practices and Standards in the Operating Room. This was made almost a decade ago and it is just timely to revisit and align it on the current and evidenced-based practices that will make us globally accepted and competitive.
The first meeting was held on April 29, 2008. Plans were laid out and both parties approved on the objectives of the activity. There are still a lot in store with this partnership. This just goes to prove that indeed, Solidarity is one key to achieving Patient Safety in the OR.
More power to ORNAP & PCS!
