AESCULAP ACADEMY NEWSLETTER 2007 2nd Semester
The Northern Mindanao Chapter of ORNAP, under the leadership of Ms. Teofanes D. Guinita, gathered 251 registered nurses and 151 nursing students to attend the half-day lecture in Cagayan de Oro City on December 2. Participants came from various hospitals and colleges in Iligan City, Camiguin, Lanao, Ozamis, Bukidnon, Butuan and Cagayan de Oro.
Nursing students expressed their appreciation of the knowledge gained from the course as they realized that there are indeed misconceptions and malpractices in the Operating Room that needs to be addressed. One participant said, “I am glad I had the opportunity to attend this kind of seminar. As a student, we hardly realized the ideal [procedures] because what we see being practiced in the hospital setting is what we perceived as correct. We really need to know what must be done in the OR because the sterility of materials will affect lives.”
Other OR nurse participants also said that the lecture helped them realize that some hospitals are not strict about sterility, and the lessons they have learned from the course are indeed vital and applicable to their respective institutions.
With the positive feedback from both student and registered nurses, ORNAP and Aesculap Academy are motivated to share with more nurses and Central Sterile Supply Division personnel their expertise on the proper care and maintenance of surgical instruments.
